東京のスクラップ＆ビルドをテーマにした「Sukurappu ando Birudo プロジェクト」（2016年〜）の一環として、
東京・高円寺キタコレビルに制作された《道》。
入居者が独自に増改築を繰り返し、昭和から平成、現代までの社会の変遷を色濃く残すキタコレビルに
「私有空間内にある公共空間」として24時間365日誰でも立ち入れる《道》を2017年に拓き、
以降、「道を育てる」というモットーのもと、多様な人々と共に独自のコミュニティをDIYで築いてきた。
ここでは、いずれ訪れるビルの解体を見据えた《道》の移設構想のもと、移設のための「輸送中」の状態を
展示することで、美術館をプロジェクトのプロセスの場と設定する。
通常は移設されることのないアスファルトや、路盤材として使用されていた建築廃材―
―どさくさの戦後期、1964年の東京オリンピックに象徴される高度経済成長期、
パルコ文化が花開いたバブル期という各時代のもの――が時間の層を成し、
タイムカプセルのように収められた輸送コンテナや、移設計画の青写真等を通して、
「作って壊された」ものたちの「スクラップ」から自らの手で未来を「ビルド」することの可能性を示唆する。
Chim↑Pom from Smappa!Group has built MICHI [street] in the Kitakore Building in Koenji, Tokyo,
as part of their “Sukurappu ando Birudo Project” (2016-).
The title is transcribed in Japanese syllables due to the unique usage of the English phrase “scrap and build” within Japan.
In 2017, they paved the street as a “public space within private space” free to enter at all hours in the Kitakore Building,
which has been repeatedly extended and renovated by tenants on their own,
and which retains a strong sense of social transition from the Showa (1926-1989) and the Heisei (1989-2019) eras to the present.
Since then, under the motto of “nurturing streets,” they have formed a unique community with diverse people through DIY.
In this exhibition, they show the MICHI “in transit” in preparation for its relocation in anticipation of the building’s demolition,
which eventually will take place, and the museum serves as a site for the process of the project. Asphalt,
which is not usually subject to relocation, and construction debris used as roadbed material;
ranging from the bustling postwar period, the period of rapid economic growth symbolized by the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games,
to the bubble period when the PARCO (a leading fashion company) culture flourished,
compose layers of the times and are stored in the shipping container like a time capsule.
Along with works including the blueprint of the relocation plan,
the exhibition suggests the possibilities of “building” the future with our own hands from “scraps” of things “made and destroyed” in the past.

Formed in 2005 in Tokyo, Chim↑Pom from Smappa!Group is an artist collective based in Tokyo consisting of members Ushiro Ryuta,
Hayashi Yasutaka, Ellie, Okada Masataka, Inaoka Motomu, and Mizuno Toshinori.
Known for their projects that stand as social interventions, sharply responding to urban issues, immigration, natural disasters, borders,
the nature of publicness and other challenges in modern society.
While often drawing both praise and criticism,
their radical expressions also defy conventional thinking and societal norms,garnering recognition both in Japan and internationally.
They have taken part in exhibitions and festivals across the globe, in addition to initiating various independent projects.
